Generations of art students were taught: there are no straight lines in nature. This is odd on two counts. First, the presumption that straight lines exist somewhere but if not ‘in nature’, then where? Second, if there are no straight lines in nature then there are no curved or circular ones either.
The Light of Day series explores ways of overlapping linear systems to create curves (there are just straight lines in these drawings!). The title followed from the drawings themselves - I had not anticipated anything like the arched, leaded window form that emerged from this investigation, a source of shimmering light and starry bursts of energy.
